ClickHouse Server Docker Image

What is ClickHouse?

ClickHouse is an open-source column-oriented database management system that allows generating analytical data reports in real-time.

ClickHouse manages extremely large volumes of data in a stable and sustainable manner. It currently powers Yandex.Metrica, world’s second largest web analytics platform, with over 13 trillion database records and over 20 billion events a day, generating customized reports on-the-fly, directly from non-aggregated data. This system was successfully implemented at CERN’s LHCb experiment to store and process metadata on 10bn events with over 1000 attributes per event registered in 2011.

For more information and documentation see https://clickhouse.tech/.

Versions

The latest tag points to the latest release of the latest stable branch. Branch tags like 20.3 point to the latest release of the corresponding branch. Full version tags like 20.3.11.97 point to the corresponding release.

How to use this image

start server instance

$ docker run -d --name some-clickhouse-server --ulimit nofile=262144:262144 yandex/clickhouse-server

If you want to use the host system volume for the data storage, start the server with the following commands:

$ mkdir $HOME/some_clickhouse_database
$ docker run -d --name some-clickhouse-server --ulimit nofile=262144:262144 --volume=$HOME/some_clickhouse_database:/var/lib/clickhouse yandex/clickhouse-server

To learn how to use the host system storage volume, see the official documentation of Docker.

connect to it from a native client

$ docker run -it --rm --link some-clickhouse-server:clickhouse-server yandex/clickhouse-client --host clickhouse-server

More information about ClickHouse client.

Configuration

Container exposes 8123 port for HTTP interface and 9000 port for native client.

ClickHouse configuration represented with a file "config.xml" (documentation)

start server instance with custom configuration

$ docker run -d --name some-clickhouse-server --ulimit nofile=262144:262144 -v /path/to/your/config.xml:/etc/clickhouse-server/config.xml yandex/clickhouse-server

How to extend this image

If you would like to do additional initialization in an image derived from this one, add one or more *.sql, *.sql.gz, or *.sh scripts under /docker-entrypoint-initdb.d. After the entrypoint calls initdb it will run any *.sql files, run any executable *.sh scripts, and source any non-executable *.sh scripts found in that directory to do further initialization before starting the service.

For example, to add an additional user and database, add the following to /docker-entrypoint-initdb.d/init-db.sh:

#!/bin/bash
set -e

clickhouse client -n <<-EOSQL
	CREATE DATABASE docker;
	CREATE TABLE docker.docker (x Int32) ENGINE = Log;
EOSQL
